Chapter Eight

Not Again

It was very apparent that all these murders were connected in some way. If I could determine the connection, I was confident that I would be able to identify the killer.

Judy informed me that the medical examiner Jim had arrived and wanted to see me in the conference room. I made my way across the lobby and walked into the conference room. Jim the medical examiner stated that he would need to do a toxin report, but the body appeared to first be administered a form of a toxin. He thought possibly it had been botulinum, the same toxin used on Reverend Josh Tee. Jim believed that the victim had been administered the toxin and then laid in the elevator and stabbed with a knife in the back. The killer was hoping the toxin would not be discovered and that way it could appear that the victim had been stabbed and that had brought on instant death.

Jayne the IMN director texted me and said that she had found Dr. Reverend Sterling Halt and that he was waiting for me in the hotel bar. Jayne wanted to be in the meeting and informed me that she would meet me in the bar. I walked into the bar and saw my new friend Mustafa, the young bright bartender, and he came up to me and stated that he wanted to share some information with me about some of the hotel guests. I thanked Mustafa and watched him walk away. There, sitting at the bar, was an older man with balding hair and a big bushy beard. My intuition told me that the gentleman must have been Dr. Reverend Halt. Jayne had arrived before me, and before I could speak, she said, “Hello, Inspector,” and the gentleman turned around and glanced my way as if to say, “You must be Inspector Sterling.” I nodded my head and said hello to the doctor reverend and to Jayne. I asked Mustafa to prepare three of my favorite drinks, the sterling.

Before I could explain why I wanted to talk with the good Dr. Reverend Sterling, he said he had heard about some of the murders and the symbols and rituals that appeared with the victims. He stated he was looking forward to explaining to me the meaning behind the various symbols and apparent ritual practices that had been performed on the bodies. I explained to him that one body, that of a young woman, in her hand had been placed an olive branch, and a Bible was found near the room opened to a verse in Genesis that spoke of peace. Another victim was found floating upside down in a fountain with a scriptural reference to water found in Genesis 26:25, and a third victim was found with a rainbow placed across his chest. The most recent victim had several pieces of silver that had been placed in his hand after he was killed.

“Dr. Reverend Sterling, I ask you as the expert, what if
